I was at the pool when it opened this morning. I was first in. I chose to swim in the lane closest to the wall. Here I am less likely to get kicked or slapped by passing swimmers.(One of the hazards of length swimming in public pools.)
I got to the end of my fist lap and a woman asked me if I would move somewhere else as it was more convenient for her to swim in that lane because she liked to do backstroke!
Had this been the old me, I would have immediately moved. Today, I have a stronger regard for myself, therefore I responded with a polite NO.
She wasn't happy. Quite miffed in fact. Thought I was rude. If I had not wanted to get on with my swimming, I would have informed her that:
1. by her mature age (older than I) she ought to have realised that the world did not revolve around her.
2. that her request was plain bad manners.
and
3. What sort of ****ing idiot swims back stroke in a crowded pool?
I'm not willing to let this go...

"No" is the most powerful word in the English language, as any two-year-old knows. I'll bet it felt great to say it, huh? (And of course, you were completely within your rights to politely refuse.)
Oh, good job at telling her "No." Wow! shew s prettynervy. I think if she had wanted that lane, she would have sat it out until you were done. I might have asked you to let me know when you were ready to get out because I would like to swim in that lane. Sheesh! So many people at the center of the univserse these days!
What in blazes was this lady thinking? Good Lord! Would YOU have asked such a thing - and really, Colin, you were in a better position to do so than was she!
She ought to have apologized to you!
Good for you for being assertive. Her choice could have been different had she been more adventurous a soul, she could have met a nice man (you) and made a friend and years later you two could have had a good laugh over it.

Good for you. I swim laps too; once a woman just got in the pool in the lane where I was swimming laps and began walking backwards towards me and I crashed into her. She wanted to share a lane and I said she could go use "that one over there". She said, "Oh, I can't go over there... he's swimming laps!"
Huh? He was standing still talking to a friend.
Sheesh.

Who would ask such a thing? As my mother used to say, "It takes all kinds to make up a world." It just seems, sometimes, we could use a few less of some.
