As I've said before, I think marriage should be divided into two parts: the civil and the sacred. In many places, long ago, marriage was a contract between two people and the church blessed it or "sanctified" it. To me, that makes sense. This allows those committed people of any type to enter into a meaningful relationship. They can choose what religious organization, if any, they wish to have to sanctify their union. Churches can decide for themselves if they wish to bestow their blessings on the unions. Not ALL religious organizations frown on "less than traditional" (please note the quotation marks) and, well, marriage becomes a legal status.
I know lots of people don't agree with me. OK with me. I just think the legal benefits should be allowed to any two people with commitment and love for each other. Period.
Try to imagine loving someone and not being allowed to visit them on their deathbeds because you're not "family." That's both insane and cruel.
