In the time I have stopped smoking, I have done much more hand knitting, especially socks as they are so easy to do and portable.
The phone rings, I pick it up and chat but I also pick up my socks and knit. It used to be a fag,
Now it's a sock.
Trouble is, when I am driving, I think to myself:
I must stop and have a knit.....
I'm not willing to let this go...

Colin, I think I started to knit so much so I'd have something to do with my hands and NOT start smoking (this was in the 70s, when we were even allowed to smoke at high school in the US). I'm one of those people who need to be "doing something" all the time, and I am glad I do that rather than biting my nails (previous habit) or smoking. Though, knitting expenses may be similar to those for smoking. ;-)
Just proves that knitting is an addiction! I must try the Sherman heel on my next socks, it's the neatest heel I've seen.

I knit while watching television so that I don't chew on my nails. Knitting is much more productive!
I must say I'm impressed every time I hear someone is able to stop smoking. I'm hoping I will do too someday. If I do, I'll stop my car for a knit and think of you :-)
