The building in the last picture is one of the first 'poorhouses' in Germany, they even had a midwifery for the 'abused' maidens, who were usually ending up there when the 'family' found out they were pregnant after having been raped either by the 'father' or the 'son' of the house.
I got to know this after a Mannheim tour by the 'Frauenbeauftragte' (womens embassador, maybe the right translation?).
Around there in the same square was the first high school for girls in Germany, too. Mannheim was very progressive in the past :-)
